What to look for when buying a router for use with 3CX Phone System

.

Purchasing a router may sound like a pretty simple task. This however can become somewhat challenging when VOIP comes into play.

There a couple of core functions that your choice of router needs to perform so as to simplify your configuration for use with 3CX.

Required FunctionalityPort Forwarding – The device must be able to handle port forwarding from WAN to LAN without changing the port numbers.

Outbound Traffic Control – The PBX must be able to send outbound packets to ANY external location.

Static Port forwarding – As inbound traffic reaches the router, the port forwarding rule functionality must have the ability to forward packets as follows;

Traffic reaching WAN on Send Traffic to Scope
TCP on port 5000 LAN IP of PBX on port 5000 Remote HTTP
UDP&TCP on port 5060 LAN IP of PBX on port 5060 SIP
TCP on port 5061 LAN IP of PBX on port 5061 Secure SIP
UDP&TCP on port 5090 LAN IP of PBX on port 5090 3CX Tunnel
UDP on ports             9000-9049 LAN IP of PBX on ports             9000-9049 RTP Streams
UDP on ports 10000-10009 LAN IP of PBX on ports 10000-10049 T38 Streams

Application Layer Gateway – An ALG or SIP ALG is also a common function on routers. However, such functionality is not always implemented in the same way across different brands and models. A SIP ALG will in any case modify the inbound and outbound traffic and will in MOST cases break the SIP exchange. We therefore STRONGLY recommend that you look for a device without a SIP ALG, or one that allows you to fully disable such functionality. Note that even though most devices provide an interface control to disable the SIP ALG functionality, the functionality sometimes still runs in the background.

IP based restrictions – For a proper and secure implementation, you should use a device that can allow or disallow traffic from specific IP addresses or ranges. This will allow you to stop unwanted traffic from reaching your PBX and block these unwanted connections at the WAN side of the router.

Optional Functionality

QOS Tagging – If the device has QOS functionality this will allow you to tag VoIP traffic to manage bandwidth utilization and ensure voice quality remains unaffected by other bandwidth intensive applications.

Links to known working routers

The following are links to guides for some routers known to work with 3CX. It is important to note that different hardware / firmware versions of the devices may generate different results. Please do not consider this an official list – lab testing and a familiarity with the device remains a pre-requisite.

Unified Communications Finally Unified with New 3CX Phone System v10

New 3CX MyPhone User Portal makes Unified Communications Features Understandable to the Average Business User

London, May 11 2011 – 3CX, international telecommunications developer, today announced the availability of 3CX Phone System version 10. This new release includes a new user-friendly web-based app, 3CX MyPhone. Other PBX’s that include unified communications do not make features such as conferencing easily accessible for the end user. The new 3CX MyPhone portal makes it easier for users to take advantage of advanced unified communications and VoIP features by bringing conferencing, presence, transferring of calls and other rich features together in one easy to use application.

“3CX has raised the bar in the unified communications market by providing a new, easy to use, lightweight user portal that makes it much easier for users to take advantage of unified communications, whilst at the same time making life easier for administrators” said Nick Galea, 3CX CEO

New Advanced User Portal – 3CX MyPhone

The new user portal – 3CX MyPhone – is web-based, but leverages Silverlight to provide a rich –“desktop like” user-friendly experience. With 3CX MyPhone, users can easily manage their extension from their netbook or desktop and avoid having to use a cryptic phone interface. 3CX MyPhone works in tandem with softphones, IP phones and even iPhone and Android smartphones, retaining flexibility for users to choose what phone device best suits them.

3CX MyPhone Allows Users to:

  • See status/presence of other users
  • Launch calls from a web page, outlook or phonebook
  • Transfer calls to other users.
  • Divert calls to voice mail
  • Monitor queue calls (if they have the rights to)
  • See missed / inbound / outbound calls
  • Create and manage conference calls
  • Configure call forwarding options when away/out of the office

3CX Phone System v10 includes the Unified Communications powerhouse, 3CX MyPhone

More Manageability and Security Features

Version 10 has also gained enhanced management and security features. Administrators have finer control over blacklisting of clients trying to register against the server. It is possible to automatically block outbound calls during night time or when the office is closed, as well as block outbound calls to countries or continents to which a company never makes calls. 3CX server event notifications were expanded, and administrators can now be notified by e-mail of critical system events such as a losing connection to a remote office or SIP trunk.

Improved PBX Performance

3CX Phone System v10 is the only native SIP PBX for Windows. This focus on Windows allows us to optimize our code for the platform. 3CX Phone System v10 performance was improved, whilst significantly reducing memory and processor usage. 3CX Phone System can run virtualized or alongside other server applications – thus not requiring a dedicated server!

Improved IP Phone & Smartphone Integration

3CX Phone System is SIP standard based and integrates with a range of popular SIP phones. In 3CX v10 integration was further beefed up with seamless support for PnP deployment of IP Phones, softphones and smartphones. Administrators just plug in an IP Phone or ask the user to install the 3CX smartphone app on their smartphone (via the Appstore/Android Market). The new clients will be visible in the management console and allow the administrator to push out the settings automatically.

Improved IP Phone Management

3CX Phone System has gone further in easing the life of the network administrator. IP Phones can now be managed end to end from the 3CX Management Console.  Vendor Independent! IP phone firmware versions can be checked and upgraded remotely – either one by one or in batch mode. This significantly reduces administration time and increases control for the administrators.

Improve Customer Service

3CX Phone System can now match caller IDs to customer names, and show these in 3CX MyPhone or even on the IP Phone. Employees will be able to answer the phone knowing the customer’s name and significantly increase customer service.

What’s new in 3CX Phone System V10?

  • 3CX MyPhone is now Silverlight based, incorporating the old assistant and is therefore much easier to deploy

Manually Configuring a Snom 300, 320, 360, 370, 820, 821, 870 IP Phone for 3CX Phone System

Manually Configuring a Snom 300, 320, 360, 370, 820, 821, 870  IP Phone for 3CX Phone System

This guide has been tested for Snom 300,320,360,370, 820, 821, 870 with firmware version 8.4.18. Be aware that different firmware revisions may have different web interface formats and functionality.

There is a known issue with using SNOM Phones as external extensions about which we are in discussions with SNOM to find a resolution. If you need to use a SNOM Phone as an external extension, you will need to implement the 3CX SIP Proxy Manager on a PC in the remote location.

The preferred method to configure a Snom Phone is via Provisioning. You can however follow this guide to manually configure your phone.

Configuring the Phone to Register with 3CX PhoneSystem

  1. Start up the phone and identify its IP Address by pressing the “Help” or “7” button. For this example we will assume the IP Address of the phone is 10.0.0.114, and IP Address of the 3CX PhoneSystem machine is 10.0.0.11
  2. Point your browser to the web interface of the phone: http://10.0.0.114
  3. We now need to set the phone to register with 3CX PhoneSystem. Go to the “Setup -> Identity 1” page, and in the “Login” tab:
    a. Set the “Identity Active” field to “on”
    b. Set the “Displayname” field to the name you want to appear on the Phone display
    c. Set the “Account” field to the extension number you want to associate with this phone
    d. Set the “Password” field to the extension’s Authentication Password
    e. Set the “Registrar” field to the IP Address of the 3CX PhoneSystem machine – in this example, 10.0.0.11. (If you would like to specify the FQDN of  the 3CX PhoneSystem machine instead of the IP Address, please review this FAQ first)
    f. Set the “Authentication Name” field to the extension’s Authentication ID
    g. Set the “Mailbox” field to your system’s Special Voice Mail Extension Number. (In a 3-digit     installation, the default is “999” – you can check the correct value from the
    h. “Settings -> General” page in the 3CX Management Console)
  4. Next, we need to adjust the audio parameters. Click on the “RTP” tab and set the “RTP Encryption” field to “off”
  5. Click the “Save” button, and then click the “Reboot” button that appears at the top of the page. Your phone will restart. After rebooting, the phone will retrieve its configuration files and register with the 3CX Phone System. This can be verified via the “Extension Status” page of the 3CX Management Console.

Configuring the BLF Keys (Including the Optional Snom Expansion Module)

You can also manually configure the Snom phone’s Function Keys (including the Expansion Module) to monitor the status of other extensions on the system.

  1. Go to “Setup -> Function Keys”
  2. For each button on the extension module, configure an extension to be monitored by setting in the “P1” row (for example):
    a. The first field to “Active”
    b. The second field to “BLF”
    c. The third field to:
    <sip:xxx@yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy;user=phone> |*20*
…where xxx is the extension number to be monitored, and yyy is the IP Address of the 3CX PhoneSystem machine. So if we want a key to monitor the status of extension number 120, and the IP Address of the 3CX PhoneSystem machine is 10.0.0.11, you should set it to:
    <sip:120@10.0.0.11;user=phone> |*20*
Note that the “*20*” is the call pickup code. You can check the correct value from the “Dial Codes” tab in the “Settings -> Advanced” page
  3. Click the “Save” button at the bottom of the page, and then click the “Reboot” button that appears at the top of the page. Your phone will restart. After rebooting, the phone will register with the 3CX Phone System with the monitoring settings enabled.

Another 3CX Job well done

“After I discovered 3CX I can’t really understand why people keep on spending so much money on their ‘old fashioned’ closed telecommunications systems.”
Piotr Rowinski, IT manager, GUSS-EX Ltd.

A job well done at Euponix

“3CX has done to our PBX what VMware did for our servers. Virtual, more manageable and since there is a lot less hardware involved a lot more reliable.”
Andor Iszak, Director of Information Technology, Euphonix
